If an outage costs you money or someone has to be present to switch over, yes. An automatic transfer switch starts the set and transfers the load on its own, then hands back to the grid when it returns.
Yes, and it is the arrangement we recommend most. Solar and batteries carry the day-to-day load, and the generator becomes the last resort for long, heavy or cloudy periods instead of running every evening.
